Since ancient times people have run, wrestled and hunted for sport. Ancient people in many parts of the world also played games with balls.

Games were a part of religious practices in some ancient cultures. This was especially true for the Greek Olympic Games, which began in 776 BC. The ancient Greeks played these games to honor their gods.

The ancient Romans associated athletic games with military prowess, not religion. They performed sports such as boxing, wrestling, chariot racing and javelin throwing.

People continued to play games after antiquity, but they were usually unorganized. Organized sports became more common in the 1700s and 1800s. People formed leagues and other organizations to regulate athletic competitions. He also wrote sets of rules for various games.
